Sample Course Plans: Majors
All students in the Bachelor of Design must choose at least one major. Information on majors available in your degree can be found here.

Double majors
A 'double major' involves completion of two majors within 300 points by following set course plans.

Specialisations
Specialisations are a short sequence of subjects which do not form a part of an existing major that focus particular themes relevant across multiple disciplines.

Secondary areas of study
Secondary areas of study are a shortened sequence of subjects, taken from the existing majors in the degree.

Enrolling in subjects
Subject selection is an important step in your enrolment process that requires careful planning and consideration.

Once you’ve enrolled in your subjects, you can create your timetable for the semester using MyTimetable.

Special consideration
If you experience circumstances which significantly affect your ability to meet your academic requirements, you can apply for special consideration. There are two types available, and it’s important to understand which is right for you.

Leave of absence
If you wish to take time off from the course you're currently enrolled in, you may be able to apply for a leave of absence.

Advanced standing
To seek credit from subjects you have previously completed at another institution you can apply for advanced standing (credit).

Diagnostic English Language Assessment (DELA)
Find out which programs are best suited to helping you develop your communication skills further, and which skills you most need to focus on by taking the Diagnostic English Language Assessment.

Over-enrolment
If you want to take extra subjects beyond the normal number of points required for your course, you can apply to over-enrol.

Overloading
If you want to enrol in more subjects than the standard amount in a semester, you will need to apply to overload.

Quota Subjects
A number of subjects offered by the University are termed 'quota subjects' or 'quota restricted subjects'. These are usually workshops or subjects with a travel component where the capacity for large enrolment is limited by available resources such as workshop space, machinery and accommodation as well as because of the mode of teaching.

Subjects with a Travel Component
There are plenty of opportunities to enrol in subjects that are partially or entirely taught overseas. Gain an international perspective and expand your horizons by studying in another country.

Internships and Vocational Placements
Work Integrated Learning (WIL) subjects are designed to provide students with professional experience in an area related to their field of study or the career they are working towards. The aim of providing industry-specific opportunities is to enable you to develop skills that will enhance your prospects of gaining meaningful employment and building your career for the future.

Humanitarian Design Internship
The Humanitarian Design Internship is an educational study tour that provides students with practical experience. Participants will undertake more than 80 hours of workshop and practical learning activities over two weeks in India. Students will undertake a team design project with support from Indian community partners.

Cross-institutional Study
If you are interested in undertaking a subject that isn’t offered at the University of Melbourne, it may be possible for you to complete this subject at another university and have it count toward your current degree. This is known as cross-institutional study.
