Dis-Connect: An Experimental Social Housing Project to connect and dis-connect.
Dis-Connect
An Experimental Social Housing Project to connect and dis-connect.
In a time where constant connectivity can lead to overwhelming stress, the concept of ‘Dis-connect’ arises as a framework to balance solitude and community engagement. This design recognizes the necessity of quiet moments to recharge, enhancing our capacity for social interaction.
The spatial arrangement features articulated zones that express varying levels of connectivity. Segmented partition walls arranged along a linear grid create intentional moments of isolation, inviting residents to embrace solitude and seek refuge. Each bedroom is enhanced with private balconies that integrate vistas of the natural environment, alongside opportunities to grow and harvest, get some fresh air, allow your dog to poop, or simply enjoy some greenery.
Community connection is reinforced through a greenhouse façade, and external agricultural and cooking spaces, which encourage residents to step outside their dwellings and engage in communal gardening efforts. This design not only addresses the pressing issues of food security but also cultivates a sense of belonging and shared purpose within the community.
In acknowledging the complexity of social housing challenges, our design emphasizes flexibility to cater to diverse resident needs. These areas present opportunities for social enterprise, enabling residents to cultivate seedlings and sell them back to the on-site nursery. Promoting economic empowerment and collaboration among residents. By incorporating these adaptable elements, our design ensures that everyone can engage with their surroundings in a way that resonates with their individual lifestyles, ultimately enriching both personal and communal experiences.
