Nostalgic Echo Social Housing
In a flourishing community, Melbourne's housing affordability crisis has shattered the Australian Dream, leaving many without hope of homeownership and forcing perpetual renting. Preston lies a suburb where the tapestry of communal bonds weaves a story that transcends cultural lines. Yet, with the loss of purchasing power and the rapid growth of house prices, those relationships are tinged with a sense of fading. The substantial rate of residential mobility with 46% of residents have graced these streets for no more than a fleeting year, marking a poignant transformation in the symphony of connections that once harmonized this community.
The absence of affordable housing is causing families to relocate frequently, eroding community bonds and diminishing the sense of belonging within the social fabric. The dream of finding a stable, secure refuge is in jeopardy.
To address this, the project emphasizes the sense of community inclusion. Articulating the concept of a courtyard and the use of elevation voids to create a visual connection facilitates the affordance of communal living, social interaction, and a collective response. While providing distinct sizes of dwellings with different levels of interaction, it produces direct financial support, indirect household chores support, and further childcare for mixed-income families living together. The project forges connections both seen and felt, ushering in a new era of communal living. Where the echoes of shared stories reverberate and where the sense of belonging, support, and stability is rekindled; through employing the standardized method and low carbon localized materials to bolster residents’ financial well-being. By crafting a diverse array of dwellings, each a unique tapestry of possibilities, it ignites an accountability to reclaim the dream that once was.
