A Big House: Self-organized prototype building for multiple owners
In the heart of Preston’s vibrant community, where young professionals, students, and budding families comprise 40% of the population, lies a yearning for connection and belonging. The allure of suburban life, abundant amenities, and accessible transport draw these dreamers to seek their place amidst the ebbs and flows of modern living. Yet, as first-time homebuyers or renters with meagre savings, they are often adrift in the relentless tides of the profit-driven and ever-rising real estate market. The closed nature of traditional housing casts shadows over their once effervescent social spirits, confining their interactions to digital realms and dimming their willingness to venture beyond their doorstep. In this rapidly shifting world, could we reimagine a shared housing model that intertwines the threads of affordability, community, and togetherness – giving life to young demographic where dreams and aspirations blossom within a vibrant, interconnected haven?
Through this project, residents embrace co-housing, transcending traditional developer-driven markets. United with friends and partners, they share capital, crafting bespoke decisions and managing costs. As stewards of their creation, they guide the collective and contribute to a solidarity fund, cultivating new. For them, the home is no longer merely a set of keys and a few private spaces, but rather soulful, collectively managed communities, kindling belonging and connection for the young and hopeful. This will be a self-growing community. By the time the project is completed, a vibrant community will awake.
