PLUG IN

Drawing inspiration from the parasitic nature of Japanese Metabolist architecture, this project examines a modular housing system that has the ability to change, grow and evolve over time. The monolithic linear structure comprises of a compact building core that houses basic necessities and grounds the project to the site through referencing angles of existing buildings.

Modules can flexibly attach onto the core to adapt to residents’ changing needs without compromising the necessities of a unit that remain unchanged in the core. A reductive grid structural system allows for low construction costs and facilitates a modular configuration of units that can be freely altered through a ‘kit of parts’ system. The linear structure also allows for a low site coverage that presents the opportunity to reinstate nature through intense rewilding and productive gardens.
