Between There and Now
Brunswick West provides an eclectic addition to the diverse patchwork of Melbourne’s suburbs. An area of expressed identity and kaleidoscopic individualism. This welcoming allure appeals to younger adults as a place of opportunity. To be who they want amongst like-minded people. With nearly a third of Brunswick West’s population aged between 20-34 and 47% of properties rented, it suggests the suburb as a transitional point. However, this perpetuates an exclusion from the housing market, pushing home ownership out of reach.
Instead of being handed a set of keys, what if we engaged Melbourne’s idealistic population in the process? Physically, as well as vocally?
Between There and Now presents a bottom-up approach to share housing, for a new demographic. The scheme provides an accessible avenue for young adults to enter the housing market, by involving end users within the construction process. As their new homes are built, so too is their new community. Employing standardised methods and re-purposed low carbon materials, the precinct reduces the idea of the traditional ‘home’ into key functions. Allowing its residents to define and appropriate their surroundings. Granting the opportunity to invent an identity for the self and whole.
A short-term home.
Created by and for themselves.
Before moving on, in the pursuit of self-actualisation.
