A Bite of Brunswick

“The problem of architecture is not that of being seen from without or that of living within. It is in the dialectical relation interior-exterior, at the level of urbanism (houses-streets) and at the level of the house (interior-exterior)” - Guy Debord, 1959

Currently, ‘The Australian Dream’ is only attainable through urban sprawl, which comes at the cost of isolation & inadequate access to community services. This project engages residents with the broader community through ‘bites’ of amenities scattered between the built-form.

A study of Brunswick re-imagines three key typologies (the house, the townhouse & the apartment) through densification & affordable modularity, where houses subsidise apartment living. Ground interventions (carving roads, streets & lanes) encourage connectivity outside residences. Internally, each unit celebrates an adaptable undetermined space to expand living/work/respite activities.

The architectural language pays homage to the migrant history via borrowed motifs, contributing to the diverse collage of Brunswick.

Our pragmatic approach to housing aims to reclaim the essence of The North’s suburbia through a more sustainable & inclusive lens, blurring the divisions of interior-exterior & public-private.
