Dorothea Yannoulidis
a non-development
This project aims to counteract the unethical and unsustainable practices of development seen worldwide today, that promote the construction of uninhabitable residences at the detriment of social wellbeing. It attempts to do so through a rejection of traditional notions of ‘property’; boundaries between interior and exterior, neighbouring units, communal and private and differently programmed areas blur into one, challenging generic spatial organisations essential to the ‘success’ of developers. This is achieved through the use of materiality with varying levels of porosity and flexibility that returns lost autonomy from the developer back to the residents, enabling them to determine their own spaces and how they want to live. This humancentric approach along with the formal contextual sensitivity of the project in turn increases the wellbeing of its residents and surrounding community – establishing a positive, non-development.
