The Village

With the constant increase of property value within Melbourne, the likelihood of buying your first single detached house is becoming progressively harder. Forcing individuals to purchase smaller apartments in high rise developments with little to no connection to neighbours or nature.

The project aims at exploring Brunswick's traditional single detached housing, and how this typology can be broken down into a more contemporary and radical way of living.

This is achieved through the creation of several low-rise micro-communities clustered within the site, adopting elements of shared amenities and common spaces. Ultimately developing a healthy collective environment and affordable built form for its tenants and surrounding Brunswick context.

The units are designed to change their internal arrangements to suit a more dynamic family growth, as well as a provide a stronger connection to their neighbours through a network of timber boardwalks. The built form also offers optimal natural lighting and ventilation, and access to an efficient solar panel arrangement on the roof.

This paves the road for a new socially oriented housing design and model which can be replicated easily and efficiently to the broader context of Melbourne.
