Student Feedback, Complaints and Grievances

Students who are dissatisfied with an academic or administrative decision may seek review and resolution under the University's Student Complaints and Grievances Policy (MPF1066).

Complaints and grievances

Prior to lodging a complaint or  grievance

In accordance with the University Student Complaints and Grievances Policy (MPF1066), students wishing to raise a complaint or grievance should firstly seek advice from an independent person knowledgeable about the process and aware of potential outcomes, such as  an advocate from the Student Union Advocacy Service, an appropriate academic staff member who is not involved in the matter in question, or a staff member from a student support service.

Informal Approach

In accordance with the University Student Complaints and Grievances Policy (MPF1066) students may attempt an informal resolution by raising their concern with the person concerned or another appropriate person.  To do so, the student should first attempt to discuss the matter with the person concerned. If the student is anxious about raising the matter with this person directly, they are encouraged to discuss it with the Manager of the Academic Support Office.  Should the complaint relate to the Manager of the Academic Support Office it may be discussed with the Faculty's Executive Director.

Formal Approach

What's the difference between a complaint and a grievance?

Complaint

A complaint is a problem or concern raised by a student who considers they have been wronged because of an action, decision or omission within the control or responsibility of the University.

Grievance

A grievance is a matter to be investigated according to formal grievance processes. This includes complaints which are not able to be resolved through informal processes or mediation, and matters relating to allegations of misconduct where disciplinary action against a student or staff member may be an outcome of the investigation.

The submission of a grievance will result in the appointment of an investigator to examine the matter, according to the process established by the University's Student Complaints and Grievances Policy (MPF1066).
