Architecture demonstrates meaning as a sign system. In China, American and English architects built several Christian universities during the early twentieth century imitating traditional Chinese style, and the symbolic meaning of the university buildings was interpreted by different groups of audience. By applying semiotic theories, this research intends to explore the communicative function of architecture in a cross-cultural context.
