Milestones

Graduate research milestones are an essential process for successful completion of a graduate research degree. They are a formal discussion and assessment of the degree and are required to be completed to maintain enrolment.

For some scholarship holders annual reporting of satisfactory progress to funding providers is required for the release of funds. On this page you will find brief descriptions of the different milestones and tables for when milestones are due.

Pre-confirmation

The Pre-confirmation milestone is the first review of a graduate researchers progress. The purpose of a pre-confirmation milestone is for the student to introduce their research to their advisory committee and seek feedback on their research direction. All graduate researchers are required to organise a meeting with their advisory committee and submit the completed Pre-confirmation form to the Research and Industry Office prior to their milestone deadline (see below tables). Download the Pre-confirmation form.

Confirmation

Graduate researchers are considered probationary candidates until they successfully pass the Confirmation milestone. This process ensures that the work to date is sufficient for a major piece of research and the confirming candidate is capable of producing a high quality thesis. The candidate prepares a thorough report, gives a public presentation and meets formally with their Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committee decides on the outcome of the confirmation and feedback is disseminated to the student through the Research and Industry Office.

For detailed information on the local procedures for confirmation please visit the confirmation webpage.

Minor Progress Report

The minor progress report is a faculty specific milestone due midway between major progress reviews. Graduate researchers must arrange an advisory committee meeting for this milestone and seek feedback on their progress. The Minor Progress Review Form is completed by the Chair of the advisory committee and submitted to the Research and Industry Office. Download the Minor Progress Review Form here.

Major Progress Report

The University is developing a system to support candidature management online. Progress reporting for graduate researchers and supervisors will become more streamlined and automated. You can find out more by downloading the project poster.
